The Playboy Symposium: On Voting

ABOut the project

Ahead of the 2020 election, it was abundantly clear to me that there was one poignant voice the Playboy readers needed to hear from: that of Alicia Garza, founder of Black Future Labs, and co-founder of both Black Lives Matter and Supermajority. So, I called upon the seasoned community organizer to gather together four additional grassroots activists, to create a timely Symposium on voting rights for Playboy’s Spring 2020 issue.

The five essayists put pen—and their collective political acumen—to paper, exploring the human stakes of voting, from the dangers of gerrymandering to the original intent of the Constitution. The curation, which was inspired by Playboy’s history of political discourse, underscored that this was not about political parties, but about people—and the urgency of fortifying American democracy for everyone it’s meant to represent. “Democracy is not a spectator sport,” Garza noted of the project. “I hope the Symposium motivates readers to get involved.”

The five essayists put pen—and their collective political acumen—to paper, covering topics that ranged from the dangers of gerrymandering to the original intent of the Constitution. The curation (whose origin, for me personally, was inspired by Playboy’s lineage of political discourse) effectively captured the urgency required to restore American democracy. “Democracy is not a spectator sport,” Garza noted of the project. “I hope the Symposium motivates readers to get involved.”
